VISION FOR THIS DISCUSSION
Cain and Abel have just offered gifts to God, but only Abel’s gift was received. God responds to the dejected Cain and tells him that he will be accepted if he does what is right. He also warns him of the crouching sin that waits to control him. However, in just the next verse, Cain goes out and murders Abel in anger and jealousy.
Sin has consumed Cain and it only snowballs from there. The curse of sin has continued to spiral into our world, and we see how sin can easily snowball in our own lives if left unchecked. But we see God’s unexpected response to mark Cain with a sign of protection, giving us a picture of God’s heart toward preserving and ultimately redeeming fallen man.
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PASSAGE
Have someone in your group read Genesis 4:6-16 aloud. What are some initial observations that caught your attention in these verses?
What does God warn Cain about? What is Cain’s response?
What do you think led Cain to murder his own brother? What does this say about sin? What does it say specifically about jealousy?
How does God respond to Cain? What does this reveal about God’s character?
QUESTIONS FOR APPLICATION
Head—To make this more personal and practical, we want to turn the question to ourselves.
Cain’s anger turns into jealousy and ultimately murder. His sin was left unchecked and snowballed into more sin. Is there any sin in your life that remains unchecked? Is there any sin that seems to be snowballing?
Heart—What seems to be hindering you from subduing this sin? What are you wanting so much that you’re willing to sin to get it?
Hands—What steps can you take to begin subduing sin in your life? Is there anything you need to confess or turn away from?
PRAYER
PRAY ‘TACOS’ after collecting prayer requests
Thanksgiving - “Father, thank you…”
Adoration - “Father, you are…”
Confession - “Father, I confess…”
Others - “Father, I pray for…”
Self - “Father, please help me…”
*If size or group dynamics seem to hinder prayer, consider dividing into groups of men/women or groups of 3-4 to reduce barriers to praying out loud
