STORY

Break the ice with a testimony..

  • Someone shares their salvation story

  • Or someone shares a celebration of God’s goodness in the past week

VISION FOR THIS DISCUSSION

Adam and Eve have been banished from the Garden of Eden. By God’s help, they have children—Cain and Abel. Cain is a worker of the ground and Abel is a shepherd. Both give gifts to God, but God only accepts Abel’s.

From this, we learn about God’s heart and what He deems as acceptable offerings. We also see the first appearance and warning of something called sin. God says sin crouches at the door and waits to control us. But once again, God gives mankind the option to listen to Him and do what is right or be mastered by sin and do what is wrong.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PASSAGE

  1. Have someone in your group read Genesis 3:20-4:7 aloud. What are some initial observations that caught your attention in these verses?

  2. What does Abel offer? What does Cain offer? Whose gift was acceptable in God’s eyes?

  3. Why do you think Abel’s gift was accepted? Why do you think Cain’s gift was not?

  4. Read verse 7. God says Cain will be accepted if he does what is right. What do you think it means to “do what is right”?

QUESTIONS FOR APPLICATION

  1. Head—To make this more personal and practical, we want to turn the question to ourselves.

How do you see sin “crouching at the door” in your life? Is there anything you’re holding back from God? (i.e. your finances, time with God in Bible reading or prayer, trusting Him with your marriage or parenting, etc.)

  2. Heart—Why are you tempted to hold back from God? Based off the Gospel and the Truth of God’s Word, why should we give God our best instead?

  3. Hands—How can you stop holding back and give God your best this week? In what ways can you subdue sin in your life?

PRAYER

PRAY ‘TACOS’ after collecting prayer requests

Thanksgiving - “Father, thank you…”

Adoration - “Father, you are…”

Confession - “Father, I confess…”

Others - “Father, I pray for…”

Self - “Father, please help me…”

*If size or group dynamics seem to hinder prayer, consider dividing into groups of men/women or groups of 3-4 to reduce barriers to praying out loud
