VISION FOR THIS DISCUSSION

Adam, Eve, and the serpent have all had their interactions. And now God steps in. God deals with the serpent, the woman, and the man each according to their actions. The judgement for their sin is given as a curse. And sin’s curse will enter into the world and affect everything.

But we are told of Eve’s offspring who will one day strike the serpent’s head after the serpent strikes his heel. Who is this offspring? How will the serpent be crushed? How will humanity escape sin’s curse?

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PASSAGE

  1. Have someone in your group read Genesis 3:14-19 aloud. What are some initial observations that caught your attention in these verses?

  2. How does God curse the serpent? What is God’s curse toward the woman? The man?

  3. Why do you think God chose these specific curses towards each of the 3 characters in our story?

  4. Of all the ways sin’s curse affects the world, based off the text, what does it seem to target the most?

QUESTIONS FOR APPLICATION

  1. Head—To make this more personal and practical, we want to turn the question to ourselves.

How are you seeing sin’s curse, as described in this passage, affect your life right now? Where do you feel stuck right now? (i.e. brides desiring control over their husbands, husbands overworking and leaving families at home, damaging/weakening your family, etc.)

  1. Heart—We have a very real enemy-Satan. But we also have a very real curse from sin.

Read the end of verse 15. Eve’s offspring will one day crush the serpent’s head after having his heel struck. We know on this side of the cross, that that offspring was Jesus. The one who will destroy Satan and the curse of sin.

How difficult is it for you to accept the reality of sin’s curse still affecting you and this world? How does Jesus allow us to feel hope in spite of this curse? How does the Gospel free us and empower us from sin’s curse?

  1. Hands—Based off of your answers, where does the Good News of the Gospel need to meet you most right now? What specific struggles is God trying to set you free from the curse of sin? What can you do this week to partner with God and His Holy Spirit to see Him give you freedom in marriage/family/relationships?

PRAYER

PRAY ‘TACOS’ after collecting prayer requests

Thanksgiving - “Father, thank you…”

Adoration - “Father, you are…”

Confession - “Father, I confess…”

Others - “Father, I pray for…”

Self - “Father, please help me…”

*If size or group dynamics seem to hinder prayer, consider dividing into groups of men/women or groups of 3-4 to reduce barriers to praying out loud
