WHY CITY GROUPS?
The point of a City Group is to help us apply God’s Word to our everyday lives through the power of the Holy Spirit, and to multiply faithful disciples of Jesus who make more disciples of Jesus. So we gather regularly to give ourselves to three basic Christian practices: sharing stories, reading the Bible, and praying.
PRAY
Ask if anyone would like to open up in prayer and ask God to bless your time together
STORY
Break the ice with a testimony..
Who has prepared their 5-7 minute story?
Who can give testimony of God’s goodness right now? (i.e. answered prayer, provision, transformation, etc.)
VISION FOR THIS DISCUSSION
Abram has rescued his nephew Lot, been blessed by Melchizedek, and will now have an eternal covenant made between him and God Almighty. This covenant will launch us into the story of the blessing from a faithful God to an undeserving family that will spread to an undeserving humanity.
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PASSAGE
Read Genesis 15 aloud as a group. What are some initial observations that caught your attention?
Look at verse 6. What does it mean to be “righteous”? How does Abram become righteous? Why do you think God chose faith as the way for people to become righteous?
Look at verse 18. What is a “covenant”? What does God promise in His covenant with Abram? How does Abram respond?
How does God show His covenant in front of Abram? What does this covenant show us about who God is and what He is like?
QUESTIONS FOR APPLICATION
1. Watch the Bible Project’s video “The Covenants”. How has the covenant with Abram been fulfilled by Jesus? What does this mean for us today?
Read Luke 22:20. Jesus says there is a new covenant in his blood. What is this new covenant?
2. Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection fulfills both man’s and God’s side of the covenants. He alone has now opened the door so that we can be made right with God (righteous) through faith just like Abram. This is the Good News of the Gospel!
Have you placed your faith in Jesus to be made right with God? If so, what blessings from Scripture do you need to have faith in right now?
3. Have you told neighbors, coworkers, friends, family members about placing their faith in Jesus to be made right with God? If so, how have they responded?
If not, what are the biggest obstacles? Who is 1 person you can be praying over and share the Good News of Jesus with this week?
PRAYER
Feel free to ask the group for any pressing prayer requests that would be good to pray over together.
Use the TACOS acronym to let the text you studied pray for you:
Thanksgiving - “Father, thank you…”
Adoration - “Father, You are…”
Confession - “Father, I confess…”
Others - “Father, I pray for…”
Self - “Father, please help me…”
*If size or group dynamics seem to hinder prayer, consider dividing into groups of men/women or groups of 3-4 to reduce barriers to praying out loud.
